Forest landscape
The park protects a landscape of primary tropical rainforest in the southern part of Temburong. Official tourism material describes habitats extending from lowland forest to mountain forest, offering a broader ecological setting than a single canopy viewpoint. Its importance lies in the continuity of forest environments and the conservation of their biological diversity.
Forest experience
Boardwalks and the canopy experience provide ways to approach the forest while keeping its structure in view. Brunei Tourism recommends organised visits for practical and ecological reasons. A visit can therefore be understood as an introduction to a protected forest landscape, with the canopy forming one element of a wider setting of vegetation and waterways.
Research
The Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre is located within the national park and supports university field research. UBD’s published flora and mammal field guides draw on long-term work in Ulu Temburong and at the centre. This research connection adds depth to the park’s public role: the forest is also a setting for documenting biodiversity and understanding ecology.
Access
The Forestry Department lists Ulu Temburong as a national park. Organised visitor access is distinct from university research access at Kuala Belalong. Confirm the authorised route, transfers and river conditions before travel. Published area figures differ between forestry and tourism sources, so no single boundary area is asserted here.
From your base to the river
Begin with a confirmed itinerary for a guided forest visit, not just a ride to Temburong. Bandar Seri Begawan can be the city base; Bangar is the district town, while Batang Duri serves the onward river journey. Official touring material describes the boat stage in a traditional temuai. A road transfer and that boat stage are separate, and a general district transport booking does not include park entry.
If arriving through Brunei International Airport, first settle your accommodation and pickup. Ask where the group meets, who handles the river transfer, which guided route is included and what happens if water conditions prevent it. These questions matter more than a fixed driving-time estimate. Do not schedule a tight flight connection immediately after the forest visit.
A full day or a longer stay
A full day is a sensible planning unit for the organised forest outing, including transfers and the return journey. A two-day stay can separate travel from time in the district, but an overnight package should name its actual lodging. Sumbiling Eco Village is a riverside stay in the Batang Duri corridor; it should not be described as a lodge inside the national park. City hotels such as The Brunei Hotel are still farther back in the travel chain. Confirm any proposed in-park overnight arrangement independently rather than treating an old resort listing as live availability.
Before booking, request confirmation of park admission, guide, boat, meals, walking distance and canopy access. Do not assume that a generic permit covers every activity. Rain and river levels can alter the order or availability of activities. Ask about stairs, footing and boat boarding if mobility is a concern. A canopy visit should be optional when height or physical effort would make it unsuitable; the forest experience need not depend on reaching the highest platform.
A forest landscape beyond the walkway
The existing lowland rainforest and montane forest guides help explain why forest changes with terrain and elevation. On a short visit you encounter only part of that range. Listen and observe without expecting the full species inventory of the protected area. The Temburong huntsman spider illustrates the scientific interest of this forest; a documented species is not a guaranteed trail-side sighting. Research access at Kuala Belalong remains separate from tourist access, and field-station locations are not provided as visitor destinations.
Local river skills and guiding are part of the experience. Respect community rules, request permission for photographs of people and keep wildlife undisturbed. For a wider itinerary, Temburong beyond the bridge links the district’s travel context to the forest. Combine the park with time in the district or a separate day in Bandar Seri Begawan, rather than packing several distant outings into the return afternoon.
