How the plant grows
Kelubi is a clustering, spiny palm of wet forest. Much of the stem lies close to or below the ground, while large feather-like leaves rise into dense stands. Its scaled fruits resemble small sour palm fruits rather than smooth berries. This swamp-associated growth differs from the tall solitary trunk of coconut and the tidal setting of nipah.

The fruit flesh is strongly sour and is used in processed preparations or as a souring ingredient. The taste explains its comparison with tamarind, not a botanical relationship to that legume tree. Leaves also have thatching uses. Identifying the palm matters before discussing its food: spiny palms with scaled fruits are not all the same species or equally suitable ingredients.
