How the plant grows

Aren is a solitary palm with large ascending feather-like leaves. Persistent dark fibres and old leaf bases cover the trunk, giving it a very different appearance from smooth-trunked coconut. The palm can reach about 20 metres. Its conspicuous fibrous covering is a useful botanical feature and a source of material, not simply debris around the stem.

Materials & other uses

Sweet sap is collected from flowering stalks and processed into sugar. Fibre from the leaf sheaths has rope-making uses. The source of sweetness is therefore sap, not the trunk starch harvested from sago. Sap collection and food processing require established practices; an unfamiliar raw palm fruit or sap is not automatically a ready-to-eat ingredient.
