Bintulu belacan

Belacan is a shrimp-based seasoning associated with Bintulu’s coastal food trade. Explore it as an ingredient with a local story, rather than a complete dish or a ready-to-eat snack.

A coastal ingredient

Belacan gives savoury depth to cooking and is one of the products visitors encounter around Bintulu’s markets. Sarawak Tourism Board also links its production with nearby Melanau communities. That regional connection does not mean every packet on a stall was made by the seller or inside the town: ask about the producer and origin.

Buying and using it

Compare products without judging quality by appearance alone. Ask how the seller recommends preparing it and which local dishes use it. Follow the package’s storage instructions and check that it can be carried securely. If taking it abroad, check destination import rules rather than assuming a packaged food is always permitted.

Know what is in the food

Belacan contains shrimp and is unsuitable for people who must avoid crustaceans. Its use may not be obvious in a finished sauce or vegetable dish. Ask directly about ingredients when ordering. Keep this distinction in mind when someone describes a dish as vegetable-based: that does not necessarily mean vegetarian.
