The solid casque above the bill distinguishes it from hornbills with largely hollow casques. Its long central tail feathers and bare neck add useful features, but the scientific name separates it from the rhinoceros hornbill.

Research in Danum Valley recorded calls by day and compared their timing with rhinoceros hornbills. Acoustic monitoring can establish presence when a canopy bird is heard clearly but remains difficult to see.

Danum Valley provides a directly studied Sabah locality. A Sarawak landscape survey also recorded the species. Its wider Southeast Asian distribution means it is not endemic to Borneo, despite strong regional associations.

Mature forest provides fruit resources and large nesting trees. Lowland rainforest is therefore a meaningful habitat connection, while records from one protected forest should not be extended automatically to all parks.

The 2020 BirdLife assessment lists the species as Critically Endangered. Poaching for the casque and loss of forest are major concerns; safeguarding trees and preventing illegal killing are complementary conservation needs.

One Kinabatangan pair, monitored in 2013–2017, nested in living Shorea pauciflora,37 metres up. Its single chick fledged in November after nesting began in May. Family ties continued six months. Food deliveries included Ficus benjamina, other identified figs and insects; the pair also duetted.

Danum Valley experiments recovered Ficus benjamina seeds from helmeted hornbill droppings. Gut-passed seeds germinated sooner but less successfully than controls. Most observed hornbill droppings landed on the forest floor or understory, away from favourable canopy sites. Moving seeds is therefore only one step toward establishing a new strangler fig.

West Kalimantan observers in 2018 heard the usual accelerating notes ending in harsh laughter, but a female approaching a cavity called faster and higher. Her nest stood 34 metres up a tree. Recorded deliveries were overwhelmingly fruit, with some snakes, mice and lizards; unidentified fruits cannot establish particular plant relationships.
