Appearance & recognition

Rambai is a Phyllanthaceae tree bearing small rounded fruits with pale buff skins. Inside are translucent to whitish fleshy coverings around the seeds. The tree grows in humid lowland forest and is also cultivated in western Malesia, including Borneo. Its fruit differs from the hair-covered rambutan, despite the similar names.

Edible parts, flavour & texture

The juicy seed coverings are the eaten fruit portion, with sweetness and acidity varying between fruits. Separate the seed from the flesh rather than describing the whole plant as edible. Belimbing hutan is a Bornean relative with ridged red fruits, illustrating how diverse the same genus can be in appearance and flavour.
