Banjarmasin

South Kalimantan

Banjarmasin is a place to understand South Kalimantan through its rivers and Banjar urban life. A visit can move between a dawn market journey, textile traditions and a bowl of soto, with time to see how waterways remain part of a working city. It is a rewarding base for travellers interested in food and culture rather than a single monument. Choose a few nights here for river excursions and neighbourhood visits, then continue separately to the Meratus foothills. The city and its surrounding regency are closely connected by travel, but attractions such as Lok Baintan have their own locations and access arrangements.

Borneo

Borneo rewards a journey built around a few contrasting places: a river city, a forest stay, a highland community or an island coast. Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei share the island, but each part has its own gateways, languages and travel arrangements. Start by choosing the landscapes and experiences that matter most to you; the country and regional guides below turn that choice into a workable route. Sabah combines mountain, forest and sea journeys, Sarawak connects river towns with caves and living heritage, Kalimantan opens five very different provinces, and Brunei offers a compact capital-and-rainforest combination. You can enjoy a substantial first trip within just one of these regions. Seeing the whole island is a much larger undertaking.

Derawan Island

East Kalimantan

An inhabited island off Berau, Derawan is a visitor base within a much wider reef-and-island seascape. Its documented green-turtle nesting makes respectful coastal visits especially important. Three nights is a useful starting point for arrival, one or two sea days and time in the inhabited island setting. Longer stays give more flexibility for sea conditions and a less hurried pace. Choose Guided snorkelling around Derawan around your swimming or diving ability and the actual site proposed, rather than buying a list of island names. A short snorkelling outing and an all-day boat circuit ask different things of the weather, equipment and traveller.

Indonesia

Borneo

Indonesia’s part of Borneo is Kalimantan: five provinces where city rivers, coastal islands, peat forests and highland communities create very different journeys. This country page helps you choose an Indonesian starting point; the Kalimantan hub compares the provinces in more detail. Come for a particular landscape or cultural connection rather than an attempt to cover the whole territory. A Sekonyer boat stay, a Pontianak and Singkawang food journey, a Mahakam heritage route and a Krayan highland visit need different airports and arrangements. Indonesian Borneo is especially rewarding when you leave room for local guides, host conversations and the travel days between places. It is part of Indonesia, so entry rules and currency differ from neighbouring Malaysia and Brunei.

Kalimantan

Indonesia

Kalimantan is the Indonesian part of Borneo, where five provinces invite five different starting decisions. Choose rivers and peat forests around Palangka Raya or Pangkalan Bun, city food and upper-Kapuas journeys in the west, Banjar river life and Meratus hills in the south, Mahakam heritage and Berau islands in the east, or coastal and highland travel in the north. The most useful question is which corridor deserves your time, not how many provinces can fit on a map. Travel usually combines an arrival city with separate road, river or island stages. Use the province summaries below to choose a starting point, then open its destination and activity pages for the actual visit.

Krayan Highlands

North Kalimantan

Krayan is a highland region in Nunukan, North Kalimantan. Rice fields, forested slopes and Lundayeh knowledge connect its landscape with food and community life. Give Krayan at least three nights on the ground when arranging an initial visit, with additional flexibility around the transport. This is an editorial starting point, not a fixed package: the useful length depends on the receiving village, host and farming season. Locally guided visits in the Krayan highlands helps turn a broad wish to see the highlands into a specific visit. Long Bawan can be a planning reference, but confirm the actual settlement and home where you will stay.

Loksado

South Kalimantan

A Meratus foothill destination shaped by the Amandit River and Dayak Meratus communities. Loksado rewards travellers who give the hills their own part of the trip. Two or three nights let you separate arrival, a guided walk and time on the Amandit. Use Guided walking around Loksado in the Meratus Mountains to choose a route suited to your experience, with Haratai or another agreed local objective rather than a vague promise of “jungle trekking”. A shorter walk with time to understand farms, forest edges and community life can be more rewarding than an overambitious distance.

Mabul Island

Sabah

Mabul is a small inhabited island reached from Semporna, appealing to travellers who want several days around a reef rather than repeated departures from the mainland. Its underwater interest includes small, closely observed marine life, while the village and accommodation occupy a lived island landscape. Choose Mabul for an island-based diving or snorkelling stay, with time between outings to slow down. It is different from Sipadan: staying on Mabul does not by itself include a permit to visit the offshore marine park. Your main decisions are the operator, the actual location and facilities of the stay, the boat connection and which marine activities suit your experience.

Malaysia

Borneo

Malaysian Borneo consists of Sabah and Sarawak. Together they offer mountain landscapes, wildlife journeys, river cities, caves and stays with local hosts, but they work best as distinct regions rather than one uninterrupted sightseeing circuit. Kota Kinabalu and Kuching are useful starting points for different first trips; Sandakan, Semporna and Miri open more specific routes. Choose this part of Borneo when you want to connect established urban bases with carefully selected nature and cultural experiences. A first visit can comfortably concentrate on one state. Travellers combining both should choose their flight connection before reserving every excursion. This page helps with that first decision; the state pages explain where to spend your days.

Sampit

Central Kalimantan

Sampit is a working river town on the Mentaya, with a waterfront, a timber-history museum and the everyday services of Central Kalimantan's main southern overland corridor. It rewards a short, unhurried stay between Palangka Raya and Pangkalan Bun rather than a rushed search for a single headline attraction. Spend time beside the river, understand the town through Museum Kayu and decide whether a separate coastal excursion to Ujung Pandaran fits your route. The port, town hotels and H. Asan Airport make Sampit a practical base; distant forest and beach journeys still need their own arrangements.

Santubong & Damai

Sarawak

The Santubong peninsula and Damai coast introduce a seaside landscape outside Kuching. Coastal stays, mountain views and cultural interpretation share the area, but the destination is not itself a single national park. Santubong–Damai is the coastal choice near Kuching: a peninsula of villages, resort areas and the forested Santubong massif. Come for a change of pace after the city, or to spend longer around Sarawak Cultural Village. The cultural village interprets several Sarawak traditions in a visitor setting; allow time to look beyond a performance and read the displays. It is a different experience from an invitation to a living community home.
