Range & habitat

Swamp jelutung is a latex-producing tree of Sumatra and Borneo’s peatlands. Unlike many lowland timber trees, it is suited to wet peat soils. Its presence connects the forest canopy with a waterlogged landscape: draining that landscape changes the conditions in which the tree and its neighbours regenerate. It belongs to Apocynaceae, not to the dipterocarp family of swamp kapur.

Growing & propagation

Research in Central Kalimantan examines jelutung in agroforestry and peatland rehabilitation, including the Kanarakan landscape. Latex offers a forest product without requiring the whole tree to be felled. Establishing trees nevertheless depends on suitable water conditions and management; planting jelutung alone cannot repair a drained peat ecosystem. Its story is as much about livelihoods and hydrology as about a useful sap.

Ecological relationships

Jelutung also supplies cambium to Bornean orangutans in Sebangau. The field study uses the older name Dyera lowii, a synonym of Dyera polyphylla, for this food tree.
