The experience
The established three-day programme links Tanjung Harapan, Pondok Tanggui and Camp Leakey. Rangers manage supplementary feeding at designated areas; this is a conservation setting with animals that may or may not appear. Riverbank observation adds another perspective, but a quiet stretch is still part of the forest experience. The Bornean orangutan belongs to this forest landscape, but a recorded population is not a promise of an encounter on your visit.
Gateway and accommodation
Pangkalan Bun is the arrival and hotel base. Boats depart from Kumai, reached by road from the town or airport. Stay ashore before departure when flight timing makes a same-day connection tight. Check where your crew meets you and whether airport transfers are included.
Time and effort
Three days and two nights is a published operator format, not a required park minimum. Walking is interspersed with long periods aboard. Compare sleeping arrangements, toilets, shade and access between decks before choosing a boat; cabin and open-deck packages are not interchangeable. Discuss mobility needs directly rather than relying on a generic accessibility badge.
Arranging the visit
Arrange a licensed local operation with a guide, boat crew and park entry covered clearly in writing. Ask which camps are included, whether ranger charges and meals are covered, and how arrival delays affect the route. Shared and private departures are variants of this same experience, not separate destinations. A listing with a calendar is not confirmation of a place on your date.
Conditions and preparation
Carry light long clothing, walking shoes, insect protection and a dry bag. Follow ranger instructions, keep food away from animals and never initiate contact. Do not swim in the river. Rain and water conditions can change the route; an operator should explain alternatives rather than guarantee every stop. Ask separately about filming or drone permissions.
Combining your trip
Give Tanjung Puting its own block of travel days. A night in Pangkalan Bun afterward can separate a river return from an important flight. Sebangau belongs to a different gateway and should not be treated as a quick extra excursion from Kumai.
