The stories behind the scenery

Masjid Jami Pontianak
Pontianak · History & city life

Where Pontianak began

The city traces its founding to 23 October 1771, when Syarif Abdurrahman Alkadrie established a settlement at the meeting of the Landak and Kapuas river system. Water connected this new centre to trade routes and surrounding communities. In Dalam Bugis, the palace and mosque make that early geography tangible: begin with the buildings, then look back towards the river that gave the city its position.

The river is still part of the day

Pontianak’s riverside is an urban landscape: bridges, neighbourhoods, passenger facilities and boats share the banks. The public waterfront offers a simple way to take it in without a long excursion. Walk a short stretch, pause for food, and leave time to watch the river traffic. Keep the working port distinct from the public promenade; a passenger journey needs its own confirmed departure and terminal arrangements.

Plan your trip

Getting there

Fly to Supadio Airport (PNK), in Limbung, Sungai Raya, Kubu Raya, outside Pontianak municipality. Arrange onward road transport to your hotel. For arrivals by ship, confirm the passenger terminal and sailing with the operator.

Getting around

Combine sights on the same side of the river. Walk around the waterfront and heritage precinct, then use arranged road transport between districts. Allow time for bridge traffic instead of planning by straight-line distance.

When to visit

Plan outdoor visits for the morning or late afternoon and keep an indoor museum stop available for rain. March and September bring interest in the equator’s solar culmination; check the city’s current programme if that is your reason to travel.

Practical information

Two or three days give a comfortable introduction. Bring water and rain protection, check attraction access before setting out, and dress respectfully for the mosque. At food stalls, ask about ingredients and your dietary needs before ordering.

History & city life

Pontianak grew from a river settlement founded in 1771 into a provincial capital. Its historic core is not a sealed museum quarter: the palace, mosque and surrounding streets belong to a living city. Start in Dalam Bugis to understand the founding story, and use the provincial museum to place it in the wider history of West Kalimantan. The river remains the clearest thread between the old trading centre and the present city. A walk at the public waterfront adds everyday activity to the monuments and collections.

River, equator & surroundings

This visit focuses on Pontianak itself: the Kapuas waterfront, the city’s river crossings and the equator monument in Pontianak Utara. The waterfront is an urban place to walk and observe, rather than a remote nature excursion. Taman Alun Kapuas lies on Jalan Rahadi Oesman opposite the mayor’s office. For the original equator monument, travel to the dedicated Tugu Khatulistiwa site; a decorative monument elsewhere is not the same attraction. The passenger port is a transport facility, so confirm access and departure details if you are taking a ship.

Culture & local flavours

Culture & local flavours

Use the museum and Rumah Radakng as complementary introductions to regional culture. Rumah Radakng is a modern landmark inspired by Dayak longhouse architecture, not an ancient inhabited house. Special events such as Gawai Dayak and lion-dance celebrations bring traditions into public space, but need their own confirmed dates. Everyday food offers another route into the city: start with chai kue, try pengkang, and look for roti kap made by local producers. A coffee break gives time to absorb the neighbourhood rather than turning every stop into another sight.

The practical guide

Practical guide

Allow two or three days and group visits by district. The palace and mosque belong together; the museum and Rumah Radakng form another useful cultural pairing. Plan road transfers between these groups and leave room for traffic around river crossings. Supadio Airport serves the city from Limbung in Sungai Raya, Kubu Raya, outside Pontianak’s municipal boundary. Confirm transport with your accommodation and check current access arrangements at attractions. Carry rain protection and drinking water, use mornings or late afternoons for outdoor walks, and keep the museum as a flexible indoor option.
